Numerous Tornadoes, Damage Reported Monday Night
An active evening and night of tornadoes resulted in several reports of damage and possible injuries across Illinois and Michigan on Monday.
Widespread damage was reported in Sublette and Coal City, Illinois along with Birch Run, Michigan – as of early Tuesday morning – after at least 14 tornado reports on Monday, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).
In Woodhaven Lakes, Illinois, a large camping resort area west of Chicago, a possible tornado led to one victim being transported to an area hospital in serious condition and four others suffered minor injuries but did not need to go to the hospital, Lee County authorities confirmed at a news conference just before midnight CDT on Tuesday. Several others in campgrounds on the south side of town required rescue by the local fire department.
In Coal City, Illinois, southwest of Chicago, power lines were reportedly strewn all over the ground around the town of 7,000 people, and damage to homes and businesses was also reported in the area as well. Flash flooding followed the tornadic storms, closing area roads and making it difficult for rescuers to reach victims.
Damage was also reported in Manchester, Michigan early Tuesday morning with a confirmed tornado in the city near Ann Arbor as well. At least one home was damaged and “major structural damage” was also reported nearby that home, although the extent of the damage was unclear as of early Tuesday morning.
The severe weather threat moves further east for Tuesday, with major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston and Washington DC all at threat for damaging winds, small hail and a few isolated tornadoes, particularly further north and west from the I-95 corridor. The big cities should expect to see storms move in between 3-6pm EDT, with DC and Baltimore likely seeing storms first, and Boston likely the latest to get them.
