Tornadoes Touch Down in Kansas City
Tornadoes touched down in parts of the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area on Wednesday evening, causing damage in nearby Lee’s Summit.
Power flashes were sighted as a tornado touched down near Lee’s Summit, Missouri just before 7:00pm CDT on Wednesday. Video of possible roof damage in Lee’s Summit showed likely roof damage to homes in the area, and several buildings were damaged in the town at a strip mall near Northeast Douglas Road and Tudor Road, according to the Kansas City Star.
The first tornado reports came out of nearby Raytown, Missouri around 6:30pm CDT, with the storm quickly moving through the heavily populated suburbs on Kansas City’s southeast side. Five tornado reports were issued by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) between 6:33 and 7:05pm CDT on Wednesday evening in Jackson and Cass Counties in Missouri.
Over 15,000 customers in Missouri were without power at one point on Wednesday evening, the majority of those outages coming from the east side of Kansas City due to the possible tornadoes.
A stationary front is triggering the severe weather, and it will slowly move south for Thursday, putting cities such as Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Memphis, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia at risk for damaging winds, hail and more isolated tornadoes.
