Disney Gets Started on Maleficent Sequel, All Hope Lost.

As not a single week seems to go by without an announcement like this, I’m envisioning a future where Disney creates an interlocked live-action movie universe of re-imaginings of their animated tales.

So, yes, Disney’s already working on a Maleficent sequel by having Linda Woolverton write a script. Maleficent II thus joins Beauty and the Beast, the Jungle Book, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo, Cruella, and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

According to Deadline, the script is being written with the idea that Angelina Jolie will reprise her role and that, as pre-production rolls along, they’ll be keeping her apprised. All in the service of making returning a welcome prospect for her, since she’s not required to return for a sequel.

One wonders what a sequel to Maleficent looks like, since Maleficent was both prequel and re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. Presumably some danger comes to the kingdom and Maleficent and her young and sleepy BFF have to fight it off. Combine it with a Cinderella sequel and have the two go to war. Please, please, please have a magic off between Helena Bonham Carter’s Fairy Godmother and the fairies. I’d watch that with a lot more joy than many of the others listed above.
