Help Raise $1 Million for Youth Advocacy Using Mobile Search in October

Every mobile search you make during the month of October could have a direct impact on youth advocacy and social change. Yahoo and DoSomething.org announced a new month-long mobile search collaboration Thursday, through which Yahoo will donate 10 cents to DoSomething.org’s youth-focused initiatives for every search made via do.yahoo.com in your mobile phone’s browser — up to $1 million.

DoSomething.org encourages young people to take action on social issues by joining campaigns and staying informed. Part of the organization’s mission is to reduce apathy.

The focus on mobile search, as opposed to desktop web search, makes sense — mobile is at the core of DoSomething.org’s efforts to reach youth. In fact, 2.4 million young people (out of more than 4 million members) have signed up for recurring text messages about social issues from the organization.

Members also participate in mobile-ready advocacy campaigns, learning and sharing information surrounding issues such as promoting sexual consent and quitting smoking.

DoSomething.org is the latest of Yahoo’s “knowledge partners” — companies or organizations that “offer professional-quality knowledge in a specialized field.”

As a result, Yahoo — which boasts more than 1 billion users around the world — will highlight top causes, such as bullying, homelessness, global warming and racism, at the bottom of your screen to drive awareness and support. Tapping each cause brings up a list of results and resources on the topic from DoSomething.org’s website.

“Whether you’re searching for ways to take action on issues you care about or searching for news about your favorite celebrity, using Yahoo Search will support DoSomething.org to help us activate more young people on issues they care about,” Naomi Hirabayashi, chief marketing officer at DoSomething.org, said in a statement.

After your first search on do.yahoo.com, any search on yahoo.com from the same phone will trigger a 10-cent campaign donation, too. Searches are only eligible if they’re made from a mobile phone, not a tablet or desktop, with cookies enabled.

The mobile search collaboration runs through Oct. 31.
