Stan Wawrinka Loses to Milos Raonic

Fourth-seeded Wawrinka fell to Raonic while No. 2 seed Andy Murray cruised to another straight set victory. We’ve reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open and both brackets have seen some upsets. In the top half of the bracket, No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are still going strong, but both singles brackets took some hits on Monday as the Round of 16 wrapped up.

No. 2 seed Andy Murray was not one of those hits, as he managed to take down No. 16 seed Bernard Tomic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(4). Murray was in the driver’s seat of that match from start to finish. There was a definite upset not far behind Murray, though, as No. 13 seed Milos Raonic took down No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka.

Raonic pushed Wawrinka all the way to five sets, and buried him in the fifth, ultimately winning 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3. In the closest matchup on the day, from a seeding perspective, No. 8 David Ferrer took down 10th-seeded American John Isner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. No. 23 Gael Monfils also punched his ticket into the quarterfinals with a win on Monday.

On the women’s side, the top seed remaining in that half of the bracket, Angelique Kerber, made short work of Annika Beck, winning 6-4, 6-0. Kerber, the No. 7 seed for the tournament, is joined by No. 14 seed Victoria Azarenka as the only seeded women on that half of the bracket. Both 15th-seeded Madison Keys and No. 21 seed Ekaterina Makarova fell to unseeded opponents on Monday.

Kerber and Azarenka will play each other in the quarterfinals, while unseeded opponents Johanna Konta and Shuai Zhang will play each other. It’s all seeded opponents in the top half of the women’s bracket, though, with Williams facing Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska set to play Carla Suarez Navarro.
