Apple Pay Launched in the UK and Everyone is Angry at Their Banks Again

July 14, 2015 By Ellen Smith

LONDON — Apple Pay launched in the UK Tuesday, and thousands of people shot out to sandwich shops to spend money using their phones and watches in the future we’d always dreamed of. There was one small problem though: Not all the banks were working with the payment service.

NatWest, Nationwide, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander and Ulster are all integrated with Apple Pay from launch, but HSBC and First Direct won’t work until later in July and Lloyds Bank, TSB, Bank of Scotland and Halifax won’t offer the service until the autumn.

Cue a lot of pissed off people.

For anyone who managed to use Apple Pay Tuesday morning, the future looked bright.

Just used #ApplePay in @Tesco this morning, very impressed.

Sounds silly but I think I’m more excited about #ApplePay than any new product from Apple since the first iPhone… Life changer.

— Nic Stevenson (@nicstevenson) July 14, 2015

I used #applepay this morning, I have to say it’s a slick little system 🙂 now we need to petition to increase the limit

— Luke Hamilton (@Luke_Hamilton) July 14, 2015

The idea of spending money in Costa with a phone was so revolutionary it made people “so happy.”

IT WORKED! just used #ApplePay in @CostaCoffee #Crewe just amazing! So happy!

— Benjamin James Mason (@BJamesMason91) July 14, 2015

For HSBC’s 16 million customers in the UK, however, things weren’t so rosy. They were supposed to be a launch partner, but aren’t offering the service yet.

. @HSBC_UK So I can’t use #ApplePay because you’re not ready? #fail

— Keith (@eurokeith) July 14, 2015

@HSBC_UK_Help you’ve moved from ‘participating banks’ to ‘coming soon’ literally over night? What’s going on? #Applepay

— James Iles (@jamesadiles) July 14, 2015

@HSBC_UK Worst Bank Ever #ApplePay

— Andy Long (@ndylng) July 14, 2015

How the F do #HSBC not have #ApplePay on it’s launch in the UK?! What a joke

— Phillip Page (@PhillipPage1) July 14, 2015

Their social media team had a busy morning.

First Direct, which is part of HSBC, was also riling people up.

Pretty hacked off that my @firstdirect account won’t work with #ApplePay today, despite them claiming to be a launch partner

— James Brenchley (@JamesBrenchley) July 14, 2015

@firstdirect hey! What’s the craic with #ApplePay ? Kinda excited about the future today, but looks like I gotta wait! #1stworldproblems

— Marshall Paul Adams (@_PatchAdams) July 14, 2015

Lloyds Bank, who aren’t integrating Apple Pay until the autumn, also didn’t escape unscathed.

No apple pay for me! Fuck Lloyds

— Alicia. (@Lissia) July 14, 2015

today #ApplePay has been released into the world but Lloyds aren’t participating yet, what a truly sad day, got all excited as well…

— Harry Seaton (@harryseaton) July 14, 2015

Neither did TSB.

Can’t even use #ApplePay Sort it out @TSB

— COMMUNION (@HalfPintOfInnes) July 14, 2015

I would be using Apple Pay today, if @TSB supported it, I don’t think “later this year” is acceptable, give me a date, or at-least a month!

— Carl Rydings (@carlryds) July 14, 2015

@TSB Sort Apple Pay out I hate being left out! I’ll go to Natwest!

— baethoven (@NoireaGa) July 14, 2015

Nor did Bank of Scotland.

apple pay launches today and the bank of Scotland don’t do it…typical

— Rachael (@Rachael_Gall) July 14, 2015

We finally get Apple Pay in the UK.

Bank of Scotland not launching till Autumn… Great!

— Lewis (@lth0ms0n) June 8, 2015

Even people with multiple bank accounts found themselves unable to use Apple Pay and pissed.

#ApplePay today. Not for me. Step up @barclays @CoopBankUK @AskLloydsBank #johnlewisfinancialservices #21century #leftbehind

— David MacDonald (@davmacrun) July 14, 2015

Some people even decided to move banks so they could get on the Apple Pay train.

Nando’s and Starbucks accepting ApplePay in July in the UK. I am moving bank if Lloyds aren’t starting straight away #WWDC15

— Jamie (@iJamieMann) June 8, 2015

Balls to you @AskLloydsBank, wait till Autumn, or change my bank in a couple of days. Good day to you @santanderuk #ApplePay

— アダム·イーストン (@adameaston) July 14, 2015

@HSBC_UK No Apple Pay from launch?? What a JOKE!! Sort this out HSBC or I’m off. #noapplypaynoway

— Steve George (@LEGALBEAGLEOK) July 14, 2015

Apple pay is out today and Halifax isn’t on the list till September. Final straw with this bank. Moving elsewhere.
