Pilot’s Emergency Landing After Midair Collision Captured on Video

June 22, 2015 By Ellen Smith

The aftermath of a midair plane collision that was caught on video has left two people dead in Canada. The two planes hit each other on Sunday evening near Fort McMurray in Alberta. One plane, shown in a dramatic video, was forced to make an emergency landing, an official told ABC News today.

The pilot of the plane that made the emergency landing survived, where the plane flipped over itself after overshooting the runway. The pilot, who was uninjured, ran away from the wreck.

A medical helicopter located the second plane, with two passengers, in an isolated area east of Fort McMurray.

“The helicopter did a search of the area and did finally find the plane about 15 miles southeast of Fort McMurray,” Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesperson Cpl. George Cameron said.

Both passengers died, according to Cameron. They have yet to be identified.

The RCMP is handing over the investigation to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada — the equivalent of the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States — to determine exactly how and why the two planes collided, according to Cameron.

McMurray Aviation, a flight training and aerial tour company at Fort McMurray, tweeted that one of their planes used for training was involved in the incident. They did not provide any other details.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
