Bomer Channeled Magic Mike Character in Real Life

June 24, 2015 By Ellen Smith

Actor Matt Bomer says he’s learned to be careful since he found himself channeling his “Magic Mike” stripper character in real life.

In an interview with “Good Morning America”’s co-anchor Robin Roberts, Bomer, 37, revealed that he got carried away at his sister’s wedding shortly after completing the indie hit that tells the behind-the-scenes story of male strippers.

“At the reception dance, I started to bust out some ‘Magic Mike’ moves, just some gyrations, some- – you know, letting it all hang out there. And I realized that my cousins were like, ‘Whoa, dude. Like, can you not do that at your sister’s wedding reception?’” he said, laughing. “I was like, ‘You know what? I should probably pull back on these.’”

Bomer reprises the role of Ken – the spiritual stripper who moonlights as an actor – in “Magic Mike XXL,” the sequel to hit, and the actor told Roberts that the cast truly enjoyed spending time together.

“I mean, I think it all starts with (co-star) Channing (Tatum),” he said. “He’s an incredible leader who treats everyone with some equanimity. And I think also just there’s a solidarity and a bond that forms when you have to get naked together in front of groups of strangers.”

Bomer also revealed that he sings in this film, thanks to Tatum — who plays Magic Mike. The original film was loosely based on Tatum’s real-life experience as a male stripper.

“(Tatum) wanted everybody to get a chance to shine in this movie and do something unique to them,” Bomer said. “And he said going into the movie he knew that it was going to be road trip movie and that I was going to sing. That was our starting template.”

“Magic Mike XXL” his theaters July 1.
