Hungarian Painter Tibor Helenvi’s Controversial Star Wars Posters Auctioned

June 1, 2015 By Jenna Bensoussan

Check out some of these original and amazing oil paintings of the Star Wars trilogy created by Hungarian painter, Tibor Helenvi, thanks to the Budapest Poster Gallery. These Hungarian Star Wars movie posters were auctioned off earlier today, and now you can take a closer look at them. They were created for the original trilogy in 1979, 1981 and 1984 — and they are extremely rare.

It was rumored that when Helényi’s artwork is discussed it is often assumed that he probably hadn’t even watched the movies before he painted these poster artworks. He refuted these accusations, saying that he did see–and enjoyed–all of the movies, but he did not want to paint posters similar to the Western European and US posters, so he let his imagination and his own artistic vision work. He even added extraneous elements to the posters, just for his own amusement.
